6/22/09: Bicyclist killed in Clinton County

In a nice change of pace, charges were filed...but it's easy to charge a drunk driver...

A 65-year-old bicyclist from Chula Vista, California has died after his bike was struck by a hit and run driver early Sunday morning in Clinton County. State Police say James Gaffney was driving his bicycle eastbound on U.S. 50 near Diamond Springs Road when he was hit from behind by a car driven by 27-year-old Leon Marcum of Centralia. State Police report Marcum left the scene but was later apprehended in Sandoval. He's being held for aggravated driving under the influence, leaving the scene of a fatal crash and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. Clinton County Coroner Mark Moss pronounced Gaffney pronounced dead on the scene from a skull fracture. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday and a coroner's inquest will be held later.
