6/23/09: PD: SUV runs light, kills 13-year-old bicyclist in Glendale

Even though the driver ran a red light, no charges were filed...
GLENDALE, AZ – A 13-year-old bicyclist killed Tuesday by an alleged red light runner has been identified.

Megan Lee was killed after being hit by an SUV at Mohawk Lane and 59th Avenue, north of the Loop 101.

Police said the SUV was traveling southbound on 59th Avenue at about 7 p.m. Tuesday when it hit Lee, who was riding a beach cruiser-style bicycle.

Lee was transported to John C. Lincoln Hospital where she later died.

Investigators said the driver of the vehicle that struck the girl, 49-year-old Cindy Aaronson, remained at the scene.

Police said Aaronson ran a red light, but speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash.

"We're looking at inattention on the part of the driver," Glendale Police Sgt. Joe Turitto said. "We don't have any indication of impairment, or drugs or alcohol. Speed does not appear to be a factor."

  1. Disturbing. Does Maricopa care about the signal they're sending?
